Connecticut Homeowners, How Often Do You Change Your HVAC Air Filter?

Connecticut’s seasons run from one end of the spectrum to the other… we have blustery, cold winters and we have hot, hot summers… especially this past summer. Did you know that July 2012 was the hottest summer on record in the last 60 years, not just in Connecticut, but in the continental US? These extreme variances in temperature cause your HVAC system heavy usage in both winter and summer. As such, it’s a really good idea to check your air filter in your HVAC system every month, particularly during those heavy use months of winter and summer. If the air filter looks dirty after a month, it needs changing. At a minimum, Connecticut homeowners should change the air filters in their HVAC systems every three months. A dirty air filter will slow down the air flow in your HVAC system and make it work harder to keep you warm or cool — thus wasting energy. A clean air filter in your HVAC system will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system — leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure. With our hot, hot Connecticut summers, you do not want to be without air conditioning, especially if your HVAC system failure was caused by something so avoidable.

Consider Installing ENERGY STAR Qualified Heating and Cooling Equipment

Is your HVAC equipment is more than 10 years old? If not, is it not keeping your house comfortable? Is your boiler more than 15 years old? How about noise? Is your HVAC system noisy? Is it heating or cooling one area better then other areas? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, it’s time for an evaluation of your HVAC system by ENT Heating & Cooling Co., Inc. If it is not performing efficiently or needs upgrading, it’s time to think about replacing it with a unit that has earned an ENERGY STAR label. Depending upon a number of factors, replacing your old heating and cooling equipment with ENERGY STAR qualified equipment can cut your annual energy bill by nearly $200. But before you invest in a new HVAC system, make sure that you have addressed the big air leaks in your house and the duct system. Sometimes, these are the real sources of problems rather than your HVAC equipment. At ENT Heating & Cooling Co., Inc., we can check your duct work and evaluate your system to determine if it’s time to repair… or time to replace. If it’s time to replace your HVAC system, ENERGY STAR-rated furnaces, boilers, air handlers and condensers are a great investment in both your home’s value and in your family’s well-being.
